In my curating I have an interest for that which is overlooked. A subculture is a group of people that is not perceived. A pause goes unnoticed. Underlying structures and hierarchies do so too. Curating is for me, a critical thinking practice and as such it is also a continuous learning process. Collaboration and dialogue help to keep it fresh.
The Saints by Paul Pfeiffer
My curatorial career started in 2009 in Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum of Contemporary Art, Berlin, where I co-curated with Britta Schmitz the exhibition The Saints by Paul Pfeiffer (October 10, 2009 to February 5, 2010). It was followed by an exhibition on Land Art, based on the collection of Hamburger Bahnhof.
Pause. Valeska Gert: Bewegte Fragmente
in 2010, I invited the artist Wolfgang Müller to collaborate in Hamburger Bahnhof on the exhibition Pause. Valeska Gert: Bewegte Fragmente.
Gebärde Zeichen Kunst.
Gehörlose Kultur- Hörende Kultur
Wolfgang Müller and I continued to collaborate on several exhibitions, such as Gebärde Zeichen Kunst. Gehörlose Kultur / Hörende Kultur in 2012 (Berlin) which travelled further to Reykjavik in 2014. An accompanying catalogue was published by Martin Schmitz Verlag.
Art and Signs. Deaf Culture / Hearing Culture
In 2022 I curated a new edition, Art and Signs. Deaf Culture / Hearing Culture at Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art.
In 2015, I was invited by the curatorial collective insitu to collaborate on Framework 6: parallelisms, which consisted of 2 exhibitions taking place consecutively and both featuring works by the three same artists: Eli Cortiñas, Ingo Mittelstaedt and Sam Smith. I did an experiment in what I like to call “literary curating”.
Up and Down. Today’s Avant-Garde as Tomorrow’s Salon Art?
Up and Down. Today’s Avant-Garde as Tomorrow’s Salon Art? in 2017 at KINDL - Center for Contemporary Art, Berlin.
In 2019 Wolfgang Müller and I collaborated once more, this time on the exhibition Chromosom XY. Männerkunst - Herrenkunst at Barbiche art space, Berlin.
The House of The Deadly Doris
The same year, we started the project space The House of The Deadly Doris that ran till 2022.
Hotel Belgrade, an exhibition in 68 hotel rooms as the main venue for Art Weekend Belgrade in 2021,
The Last Show
I also love to work with art students and recently Prof. Arnold Dreyblatt invited me to collaborate with him on The Last Show at Muthesius Kunsthochschule in Kiel.
Since 2016 I accompany the travelling exhibition of Rosemarie Trockel for Ifa (Institute of Foreign Affairs, Stuttgart). With visual storyteller Ulli Grötz I created an accompanying exhibition booklet.
Lately, I have been exploring more ephemeral forms of curating that don’t take place in an exhibition space. It can be a residency, a happening, a party. I’m especially fond of eventualities: short, intimate and spontaneous events, that don’t need an audience, a space, an invitation or an email reminder. If often curate them impromptu as part of my talks.
Project Space Festival
For the Project Space Festival 2022, I curated a pop-up of the 1980s West-Berlin project space Galerie Eisenbahnstraße in the pop-up store Period Panty Shop at Dreiwerkraum, Kreuzberg.
Die Tödliche Doris: Tournee
The House of The Deadly Doris created a travelling exhibition with a careful selection of the oeuvre of The Deadly Doris, reducing it to its most essential. It turned out that the complete work of The Deadly Doris, although covering multiple media, fits easily in a transport crate of 510 x 445 cm. It can be shown in both small and big spaces. The exhibition can take on tiny or gigantic dimensions. It did so for the first time during the Transit film festival in Regensburg in November 2023.
M.B. Memorial Birthday Parties
I collaborated on a few M.B. Memorial Birthday Parties organised by Michal B. Ron, art historian and Marcel Broodhaers expert. The first one was in 2021, with a whipped cream hat from the artist Daniel Chluba. In 2022 and 2023 we published pamphlets at AAAAA PPPPP Publishing. In summer 2023, we celebrated a M.B. halb Memorial Birthday Party at the the library of the Freie Universität Berlin, also featured by AAAAA PPPPP Publishing.
Call for Archives
In Spring 2023, I organised a month long residency on archives in two parts: one residency on archives and volcanoes at Magazin Macura, an Archive for Artistic Practices in Stari Banovci, Serbia, with the artists Lucie Stecker and Helga Franza, and a follow-up residency with a Call for Archives: Survival Kit at Zeta Center for Contemporary Art in Tirana, Albania, with the platform minìsae.
