In my curating I have an interest for that which is overlooked. A subculture is a group of people that is not perceived. A pause goes unnoticed. Underlying structures and hierarchies do so too. Curating is for me, a critical thinking practice and as such it is also a continuous learning process. Collaboration and dialogue help to keep it fresh.

The Saints by Paul Pfeiffer

My curatorial career started in 2009 in Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum of Contemporary Art, Berlin, where I co-curated with Britta Schmitz the exhibition The Saints by Paul Pfeiffer (October 10, 2009 to February 5, 2010). It was followed by an exhibition on Land Art, based on the collection of Hamburger Bahnhof.

Literary Curating

In 2015, I was invited by the curatorial collective insitu to collaborate on Framework 6: parallelisms, which consisted of 2 exhibitions taking place consecutively and both featuring works by the three same artists: Eli Cortiñas, Ingo Mittelstaedt and Sam Smith. I did an experiment in what I like to call “literary curating”.

Rosemarie Trockel

Since 2016 I accompany the travelling exhibition of Rosemarie Trockel for Ifa (Institute of Foreign Affairs, Stuttgart). With visual storyteller Ulli Grötz I created an accompanying exhibition booklet

Eventualities

Recently, I have been exploring more ephemeral forms of curating that don’t take place in an exhibition space. It can be a residency, a happening, a party. I’m especially fond of “eventualities”: short, intimate and spontaneous events, that don’t need an audience, a space, an invitation or an email reminder. If often curate them impromptu as part of my talks.

Project Space Festival

For the Project Space Festival 2022, I curated a pop-up of the 1980s West-Berlin project space Galerie Eisenbahnstraße in the pop-up store Period Panty Shop at Dreiwerkraum, Kreuzberg.

Die Tödliche Doris: Tournee

The House of The Deadly Doris created a travelling exhibition with a careful selection of the oeuvre of The Deadly Doris, reducing it to its most essential. It turned out that the complete work of The Deadly Doris, although covering multiple media, fits easily in a transport crate of 510 x 445 cm. It can be shown in both small and big spaces. The exhibition can take on tiny or gigantic dimensions. It did so for the first time during the Transit film festival in Regensburg in November 2023.
